Pedro Acosta delivered a cautious verdict on KTM’s Sepang test, rating the team’s performance six out of ten despite visible progress. The rookie believes more work is needed before KTM can regularly challenge Ducati at the front.

Pedro Acosta offered a measured assessment of KTM’s performance after the conclusion of the Sepang MotoGP test, describing the team’s showing as “six out of ten” despite clear signs of improvement.

The highly rated rookie acknowledged that the KTM RC16 has taken important steps forward over the winter, but stressed that more work remains before the team can challenge consistently at the front. Acosta set a best lap of 1:57.253 to finish eighth overall, yet believed a top-five result was within reach. He felt that not using soft tyres during the best track conditions limited his outright pace.

Rather than focusing on positions, Acosta said his priority was completing his programme and gathering data. He emphasised that development and understanding the bike were more important than headline lap times at this stage of pre-season testing.

KTM’s progress was also reflected in the performance of Maverick Viñales, who placed the team as high as third on the opening day. The improved competitiveness suggests that the manufacturer’s intensive winter development programme is beginning to deliver results.

However, the test also revealed areas that still require attention. Acosta admitted that the team encountered several unexpected characteristics on the bike, highlighting the ongoing process of refining the RC16. He noted that each test session continues to uncover new challenges alongside positive developments.

For Acosta, the main objective in Sepang was to build a solid base setup and maximise time on track. He explained that avoiding crashes and completing consistent runs were key priorities as he continues to adapt to MotoGP machinery.

Looking ahead, Acosta views the upcoming Buriram test on February 21 and 22 as a more accurate measure of KTM’s true potential. While he acknowledged that Ducati remain a step ahead, he believes KTM are closing the gap. The Spaniard is aiming to focus more on outright speed in Thailand to better assess where the team stands against its main rivals.
