Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard has made a worrying admission that previous shortcomings may impact the Gunners' title push. The north London side fell to a 3-2 loss to Manchester United on Sunday evening as Mikel Arteta's men suffered their first home reverse of the season. Defeat to United saw their lead at the top of the table cut to just four points.

The Premier League title race took a tense twist this weekend as Arsenal suffered a narrow 3-2 home defeat to Manchester United, cutting their lead at the top of the table to just four points. The loss sparked fresh debate over whether past near-misses are weighing on the squad’s mental strength.

Gunners Falter at the Emirates

What began as a promising fixture quickly turned into heartbreak for Mikel Arteta's side. Arsenal initially took the lead, only for Matheus Cunha to snatch a dramatic 87th-minute winner for United. An own goal from Lisandro Martinez and a late equaliser by Mikel Merino couldn’t prevent the shock.

This defeat marks the Gunners’ third consecutive Premier League match without a win, allowing rivals like Manchester City to close in. The setback has amplified pressure on Arteta and his squad during a pivotal stage of the title race.

Ødegaard Speaks Out: Past Failures as Motivation

Captain Martin Ødegaard admitted that previous seasons, where Arsenal finished runners-up three times, remain in the players’ minds. He told reporters:

"Obviously, it is a factor, but it can be a good factor as well. It gives you more fuel, and more hunger and determination to get it done. We have experienced in all those seasons that it is a long run and a lot of things happen. Be together now, look for the next game and bounce back. It is a long run, and there is a long way to go. The important thing is to stay in the moment."

Despite being substituted in the 58th minute, Ødegaard stressed the team must stay united and focused. He added, "We can’t listen too much to the expectations and everything around it. It was never going to be easy. We have to keep working and keep going. We are still top of the league, and we will keep pushing each other and be together now."

Saka Calls for Unity

Forward Bukayo Saka echoed his captain’s sentiments, urging a collective response:

"The journey is not always going to be smooth; there’s going to be ups and downs. It’s up to us to show our character this week. That’s all our focus is now, we can’t change the result now. It’s a tough loss to take, but we have to stick together. We go again this week. We’ll try and get back to winning ways."

Arteta Demands Mental Resilience

Manager Mikel Arteta emphasised the need for "mental strength" to navigate setbacks, acknowledging "uncharacteristic mistakes" that shifted momentum. He called for players, fans, and the club to rally around the squad.

With matches against Kairat Almaty in the Champions League and a Premier League trip to Leeds coming up, Arsenal faces a crucial stretch. Their response in the coming games could define whether they finally overcome the psychological hurdles of previous near-misses and secure the title.
