Rising star Freddie Slater has become the first recruit of the Audi F1 Team's new Driver Development Programme.

Formula 1’s horizon just got brighter as Audi, fresh from its acquisition of the Sauber F1 Team, makes a bold statement by launching its Driver Development Programme and naming a prodigious talent as its first member.

Audi’s Ambition: Building Future Champions

Audi isn’t simply joining Formula 1, they’re laying the groundwork for a long-term dynasty. Following the Sauber acquisition, the German manufacturer wasted no time creating a structured pathway for the next generation of racing stars. The new academy is overseen by three-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner and former F1 driver Allan McNish, whose experience and keen eye for talent signal Audi’s serious commitment to nurturing young drivers.

McNish, synonymous with Audi’s endurance racing success, leads the initiative with a focus on identifying and cultivating exceptional talent, reflecting the brand’s goal to compete at the highest level while developing homegrown stars.

Freddie Slater: The Teenage Phenomenon

At just 17, Freddie Slater is already a decorated driver. Following a string of championship wins in karting, he claimed both the UAE and Italian Formula 4 titles in 2024 and added the Formula Regional European Championship (FRECA) in his rookie campaign. His meteoric rise has earned him a place in Audi’s new junior programme and a seat in Formula 3 this season with Trident Motorsport.

“It’s an incredible honour to be the first driver selected for the Audi Driver Development Programme,” said Slater. “Audi is a brand with a legendary motorsport history, and to have their trust and support at this crucial stage of my career is a dream come true. Joining forces with a respected team like Trident Motorsport for Formula 3 and having the backing of Audi Revolut F1 Team is a massive opportunity. I am fully focused on working hard and making the most of this pivotal step towards my goal of reaching Formula 1.”

Prema’s outgoing team principal, Rene Rosin, previously praised Slater’s dedication and talent: “His work attitude, his dedication, he’s really into all the details, and he’s trying to really push all the boundaries to the extreme to get everything done perfectly. He pushes the team forward; he’s just a hard worker. He has the raw speed, innate talent, but on the other hand, there’s his determination; he knows what he wants. These are the key aspects for him.”

A Clear Path with Trident Motorsport

Slater’s move to Formula 3 with Trident Motorsport positions him within one of the most successful junior setups, having guided recent champions Gabriel Bortoleto, Leonardo Fornaroli, and Rafael Camara. With Audi’s backing, Slater is on a prime trajectory toward Formula 1, combining elite team support with structured development.

McNish’s Vision: Fostering Talent

Allan McNish emphasised Slater’s potential and character: “In Freddie, we see the immense potential of a future star. His track record is remarkable, but more importantly, he possesses the focus, determination, and willingness to learn that are essential for reaching the pinnacle of our sport. He is the ideal candidate to be the first signing of the Audi Driver Development Programme, and we are committed to providing him with the tools, mentorship, and support he needs to succeed as he steps up to Formula 3 with Trident Motorsport. This is the first step in building our future on and off the track.”

Audi says Slater’s recruitment reinforces the team’s “strategic focus on youth and long-term planning, laying the foundation for a competitive team and aiming to cultivate the champions of tomorrow.”

With talent, support, and ambition aligned, Freddie Slater’s journey with Audi promises to be the start of an exciting new chapter in Formula 1.
