The badminton world says goodbye to one of its brightest stars as Carolina Marín, Spain’s undisputed queen of the sport, announces her retirement. Persistent knee injuries forced the decision, bringing an end to a career that redefined women’s badminton and inspired players around the globe.
Marín shared the news on Instagram, expressing both sadness and acceptance. She revealed that while she had hoped for one final on-court farewell, her health had to take priority. “My journey in professional badminton has come to an end,” she wrote. “I wish my career had ended another way. Deep down I did retire on court, in Paris in 2024, we just did not know it at the time.”

Her path to retirement was marked by repeated setbacks. She missed the 2020 Tokyo Olympics due to a severe knee injury and was forced to withdraw from the Paris 2024 Olympic semi-final for similar reasons. Even with hopes to compete at the European Championships in her hometown of Huelva, she made the difficult choice to protect her body. Her repeated comebacks demonstrated a rare resilience and dedication to the sport.
Marín’s legacy is defined by her remarkable achievements. She captured Olympic gold at Rio 2016, defeating India’s PV Sindhu in a thrilling final, and became the first woman from a non-Asian country to win Olympic gold in women’s singles. She also won three World Championships, in 2014, 2015, and 2018, cementing her place as a global force and creating one of badminton’s most iconic rivalries with Sindhu.
Beyond her medals, Marín broke barriers. Her aggressive playing style and intensity introduced a new dynamism to the women’s game and inspired athletes outside traditional badminton strongholds. She proved that talent and dedication could overcome geographic limitations in a sport long dominated by Asian countries.
Her retirement leaves a gap in the upper ranks of women’s badminton. Fans will miss her fierce smashes, thrilling rivalries, and magnetic presence. Yet, Marín’s career remains a testament to perseverance, passion, and excellence, ensuring that her influence will continue to inspire future generations of athletes worldwide.
