Cheah Liek Hou has strengthened his status as one of Malaysia’s greatest athletes after claiming his ninth world championship title in Bahrain, setting a new national record for individual sporting success.
With the latest triumph, Liek Hou moved ahead of squash legend Nicol David, who previously held the record with eight world titles. The achievement marks a major milestone in Malaysian sport and reflects Liek Hou’s long-standing consistency at the highest level of para-badminton.
Competing in the men’s singles SU5 final, the world No. 1 delivered a dominant performance against Taiwan’s Fang Jen Yu. Liek Hou controlled the match from the start and secured victory with a convincing 21-6, 21-11 scoreline.

The win extended his remarkable head-to-head record against Fang to 19-0, underlining his continued dominance in the category and his ability to perform under pressure on the biggest stage.
Liek Hou’s latest success adds to a career built on discipline, resilience and technical excellence. His achievements have set new standards for Malaysian athletes and strengthened the country’s presence in international para-sport.
The celebrations may be short-lived, however, as Liek Hou is aiming to add another title to his collection. He is scheduled to compete in the SU5 men’s doubles final alongside Faris Ahmad Azri later in the tournament.
A victory in the doubles event would complete a double-gold campaign and further enhance Liek Hou’s legacy as one of the most accomplished athletes of his generation.
