Former world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei has raised concerns over the Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) proposal to introduce a new 15x3 scoring system, saying the current format remains the preferred choice among players.
Chong Wei, who now serves as Badminton Association of Malaysia performance committee director, said most players are still comfortable with the existing 21-point system, which has been widely used in international competition in recent years.
The BWF is expected to make a final decision on the proposed scoring change during its annual general meeting, held alongside the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals in Horsens, Denmark. The suggestion is part of ongoing discussions to potentially shorten match duration and improve commercial appeal.
Chong Wei acknowledged the reasoning behind the proposal but urged caution, saying any changes should carefully consider the views of players and stakeholders on the ground. He noted that while shorter matches could make the sport more attractive for audiences and broadcasters, the current system has already produced balanced and entertaining contests.
He also reflected on past experiments with scoring formats in badminton, pointing out that the sport has gone through multiple changes before eventually settling on the current 21-point system.
According to Chong Wei, most players are hesitant about another major overhaul, and any adjustment should not disrupt the rhythm and identity of the game.
The discussion comes at a time when badminton is preparing for a busy international calendar, with major team and individual events taking place in the coming weeks.
