A badminton coach was fined RM3,000 by the Sessions Court in Kangar after pleading guilty to offering a RM55 bribe to a police corporal more than three years ago. The offence took place in May 2022 when the coach attempted to influence the officer not to take legal action against him for driving without a valid licence.
The judge, Datuk Nu’aman Mahmud Zuhudi, ordered the 45-year-old coach, identified as Lim Chon Shia, to serve three months in jail if he cannot pay the fine. Lim paid the penalty in full during the court session.
Prosecutors said Lim handed the cash to the police corporal in the hope the officer would refrain from prosecuting him for the traffic offence. The incident occurred at Jalan Guar Nangka in Arau at around 10.45am on May 28, 2022, and was prosecuted under Section 214 of the Penal Code.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) led the prosecution, with Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Atikah Ab Rashid and Perlis MACC officer S. Sujatha presenting the case, while Lim was represented by a lawyer from the National Legal Aid Foundation.
This case highlights even modest attempts to influence law enforcement are treated seriously by Malaysian courts. It also underscores ongoing efforts by authorities to enforce integrity and accountability in interactions with public officials.
