American star Coco Gauff was forced to retire during her third‑round match at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells after persistent pain in her left arm made it impossible for her to continue. The 21‑year‑old, ranked world No. 4, pulled out while trailing Alexandra Eala 6‑2, 2‑0 on Sunday, marking only the second time in her professional career that she has withdrawn from a match mid‑play.
Gauff first experienced discomfort early in the match and took a medical timeout to receive treatment on her shoulder and forearm. She attempted to continue, but the pain worsened and forced her to stop playing. Gauff apologized to Eala at the net after announcing her decision to retire. “I’m sorry. You were playing great,” she said.
Explaining the injury after the match, Gauff described the sensation as feeling “like a firework going off inside my arm” and said the pain spread throughout her forearm, making it difficult to play even on shots that did not use her left arm. She said she will undergo an MRI scan to determine the exact cause of the pain, which medical staff believe may be related to nerve irritation rather than a long‑term injury. Gauff expressed optimism that the issue will not keep her out for an extended period and that she aims to be ready for the upcoming Miami Open, the next stop in the “Sunshine Double” immediately following Indian Wells.
Eala, a rising 20‑year‑old from the Philippines, will move on to the round of 16, where she is set to face Czech player Linda Noskova. After the match, Eala acknowledged it was not the ideal way to advance but said she was pleased with her performance and eager to build momentum in the tournament.
Gauff’s withdrawal was a disappointing end to her Indian Wells campaign, especially after a strong run that saw her among the favourites early in the event. The injury reminds many players and fans of the physical challenges of the demanding tour schedule, and the American’s health will now be the focus as she prepares for the next major event in Florida.
