Tactical Bond with the No.10
Roberto De Zerbi has credited his own playing background as a former creative midfielder for the strong understanding he shares with Xavi Simons. The Tottenham playmaker played a key role in the 2-2 draw with Brighton, assisting Pedro Porro’s opener before scoring a standout 77th-minute equaliser himself.
Key Points:
- De Zerbi credits his past as a No.10 for his strong understanding with Xavi Simons.
- Simons starred in Spurs’ 2-2 draw with Brighton, scoring and assisting in a standout display.
- The Spurs boss demands higher consistency and end product from the £52m signing.
- Spurs sit 18th and must win against Wolves to kickstart their fight for survival.
“Lucky to work with me” – De Zerbi on Simons
Speaking to SpursPlay, De Zerbi joked that Simons benefits from their shared footballing mindset, built around the No.10 role. He explained that their connection stems from seeing the game in a similar way, especially in terms of attacking responsibility.
“He’s lucky to work with me—not because I’m good, but because I was a number 10,” De Zerbi said. “What he thinks now, I thought 20 years ago. I love number 10s. They must score and assist—not just play nice football.”
High Standards for Simons
Since joining from RB Leipzig for around £52 million last summer, Simons has recorded two goals and five assists in 27 Premier League appearances. While De Zerbi is pleased with his progress, he insists the Dutch international must deliver consistent end product to keep his place.
The Spurs boss added that confidence is key, stressing his role in helping Simons develop, while also pushing him to raise his output as both a scorer and creator.
Must-Win Trip to Molineux
Tottenham are still searching for their first Premier League win of 2026 and face a crucial away match against bottom side Wolves this weekend. A 95th-minute equaliser conceded against Brighton has left them 18th, intensifying pressure on the squad to respond.
With a tough run of fixtures ahead against stronger opposition, three points at Molineux could prove vital in De Zerbi’s bid to stabilise Spurs’ season and spark a late survival push.
