Flavio Cobolli delivered the standout performance of his young career at the Mexican Open, defeating Frances Tiafoe 7-6(4), 6-4 to claim the ATP 500 title in Acapulco and secure a place inside the world’s Top 15.
The 23-year-old Italian capped an impressive week with a composed display in a final that lasted two hours and nine minutes. Although decided in straight sets, the contest was tightly contested throughout.
Tiafoe threatened early in the opening set, racing to a 3-1 lead in the tie-break. Cobolli responded with authority, winning key points under pressure to take control of the breaker and claim the set. In the second, he built a 4-2 advantage before the American fought back to level at 4-4. Cobolli again raised his level at the crucial stage, winning eight of the final 10 points. He broke for 5-4 and sealed the victory with his tenth ace of the match.
The title represents a significant turnaround in the head-to-head rivalry. Cobolli had lost both of his previous meetings with Tiafoe in straight sets on outdoor hard courts. His ability to reverse that trend on one of the tour’s biggest stages underlines his rapid development and growing confidence.
Both finalists had been tested in demanding semifinals. Cobolli showed resilience by recovering from 3-1 down in the deciding set to defeat Miomir Kecmanovic. Tiafoe advanced after a dramatic three-set battle against Brandon Nakashima, who came within two points of victory in a second-set tie-break.
Cobolli’s triumph also carries historical weight. At 23, he becomes the youngest Acapulco champion since Dominic Thiem lifted the trophy in 2016 at age 22. The victory marks his first ATP title of the season and signals his emergence as a genuine contender at the top level.
With the ranking points earned in Acapulco, Cobolli is projected to rise from No. 20 to a career-high No. 15 in the world. He joins compatriots Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti inside the Top 15, further strengthening Italy’s presence among the elite in men’s tennis.
Cobolli’s breakthrough in Acapulco not only delivers the biggest title of his career, but also confirms his steady ascent on the ATP Tour.
