Joao Fonseca delivered a breakthrough performance at the 2026 BNP Paribas Open, battling back from the brink of defeat to eliminate Karen Khachanov in a dramatic second round clash at Indian Wells.
The young Brazilian defeated the higher ranked Russian 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4 in a gripping encounter that showcased both resilience and growing maturity. Fonseca saved two match points during the second set tiebreak before turning the match around and sealing one of the most memorable wins of his young career.
The victory comes after a difficult start to the season for Fonseca. A lingering lower back injury disrupted his early schedule and he arrived in California with just one win from his first four matches of the year, including an early exit in Buenos Aires.
However, a recent doubles victory in Rio de Janeiro alongside veteran Marcelo Melo appeared to restore his confidence heading into the tournament.
Against Khachanov, Fonseca demonstrated remarkable composure under pressure. Facing elimination at 6-4 in the second set tiebreak, the Brazilian refused to back down and fought his way through the tense moments before completing the comeback in the deciding set.
“Those are the victories we look for on tour,” Fonseca told Tennis Channel after the match. “I saved match points, had ups and downs, but kept fighting and got through.”
The atmosphere inside the stadium also played a major role in the match. A large group of Brazilian supporters filled the stands and created a lively environment throughout the contest. Long lines formed outside the court as fans waited to watch the 18 year old rising star in action.
Fonseca acknowledged the importance of the crowd after the match.
“The crowd was crazy out there. It was amazing to see,” he said. “It was not only Brazilians. There were also people from other countries cheering as well.”
According to Fonseca, the energy from the spectators helped him stay focused during the most difficult moments of the match, particularly when he was trailing in the second set tiebreak.
Beyond the result itself, the win highlighted the development in Fonseca’s game and mindset over the past year. The Brazilian noted that the experience gained on the professional tour has helped him better manage the challenges of high level competition.
“The experience on tour is very important,” he explained. “The consistency is what separates the Top 50 from the Top 20.”
Fonseca also believes he has grown significantly since his previous appearance at Indian Wells.
“I feel confident again and I feel healthy. I think the Joao from last year and the Joao now is much more mature.”
With momentum now on his side, Fonseca will face another tough challenge in the next round when he meets American Tommy Paul.
Paul won their only previous meeting at the 2025 Madrid Open, but Fonseca arrives at this matchup with renewed confidence and the belief that he can continue his impressive run in the California desert.
After surviving one of the tournament’s most dramatic matches so far, the young Brazilian has firmly placed himself among the players to watch at this year’s Indian Wells.
