Coco Gauff once again proved her reputation as one of the most clutch competitors on the WTA Tour, producing a remarkable comeback at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome to defeat rising star Iva Jovic in a thrilling three-set battle.
The No. 3 seed found herself on the brink of elimination when Jovic, the 16th seed, served for the match at 5-3 in the second set. The 19-year-old had been in control and was closing in on a breakthrough win, while Gauff briefly conceded she was already thinking about the possibility of defeat.
However, the momentum shifted dramatically as Jovic faltered under pressure. Gauff seized her opportunity, saving match point and then storming through five consecutive games to level the match and force a deciding set. From there, she maintained control to complete a hard-fought victory after 2 hours and 46 minutes on court.
The match also highlighted an unusual reversal of roles. While Gauff has long been viewed as a teenage prodigy, she now finds herself in the position of experience at 22 years old, with Jovic representing the younger breakout talent. Jovic’s rapid rise this season, including a Top 20 debut and a Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open, made the win even more significant for Gauff.
This latest comeback was not an isolated incident. Earlier in the tournament, Gauff also recovered from a double-break deficit against Solana Sierra, further underlining her resilience throughout the Rome event.
With multiple comeback wins already under her belt, Gauff has strengthened her position as a serious contender for the title. Her ability to stay composed under pressure has become a defining feature of her campaign in Rome.
She now moves into the quarterfinals, where she will face eighth seed Mirra Andreeva. The teenager arrives in strong form after finishing runner-up at the Madrid Open, setting up a high-quality clash between two of the tour’s most in-form young players.
