Independent Malaysian shuttler Goh Jin Wei has received medical clearance to join the national team’s 10-day training camp in Herning, Denmark, as preparations intensify for the upcoming Uber Cup. Her participation, however, does not automatically guarantee a spot in the final squad.
The talented 51st-ranked world player initially delayed her decision due to health concerns, seeking advice from her doctor before committing to the mandatory camp. The training program represents the final intensive preparation phase for the prestigious team event, scheduled from April 24 to May 3.
Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) coaching director Kenneth Jonassen emphasized that all selections, including those for independent players, are merit-based. "A place on the Uber Cup team must be earned," Jonassen said. He highlighted that consistent performance and the ability to contribute across multiple matches remain the key criteria for national representation.
Goh Jin Wei is currently fine-tuning her game under coach Nova Armada at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) ahead of the Badminton Asia Championships (BAC) in Ningbo, which begins on Tuesday. Her performance in China will be closely observed by Jonassen and national head coach Tey Seu Bock, providing a crucial assessment before the squad is finalized on April 10.
For Malaysia’s men’s singles independents, the path is different. Lee Zii Jia and Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin will rely solely on ABM training to prove their readiness, as neither qualified for the BAC. Aidil has been training consistently since February 23, while Lee’s return has been delayed by an ankle strain, complicating the Thomas Cup selection process.
Goh Jin Wei’s participation in Denmark and performance at the BAC will be decisive in determining whether she can secure a place in Malaysia’s Uber Cup lineup.
