The gauntlet has been thrown! National badminton head coach Herry IP has laid down a clear, non-negotiable challenge to Malaysian badminton's top men's doubles pairs. After controversial reshuffles, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun are back together, and Herry expects nothing less than a title from their upcoming European swing. This isn't just about winning; it's about validating strategic decisions and restoring crucial confidence ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics push.
- Herry IP demands at least one title from the upcoming Denmark, French, or Hylo Opens.
- Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun have officially reunited.
- BAM approved the pairs' wish to return to their original partners after initial reshuffle plans.
- Pairs withdrawn from Arctic Open to prioritize Asian Games and focus on reinstated partnerships.
European Conquest: Herry IP's Title Ultimatum
The pressure is on. Coach Herry IP has made his expectations crystal clear: the reunited senior men's doubles pairs Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun must bring home a championship trophy from the highly anticipated European circuit. They are set to compete in the Denmark Open (Oct 13-18), French Open (Oct 20-25), and Hylo Open (Oct 27-Nov 1).
"We want the best results. At the minimum, from these three tournaments, there must be a champion," Herry declared. This forceful demand aims to revitalize Aaron-Wooi Yik's confidence, especially after their strong runner-up finish at last month's World Championships. For Wei Chong-Kai Wun, while acknowledging they need time, the title expectation remains firm.
The Unbreakable Bonds: Partnerships Restored
After a period of strategic experimentation, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has given the green light for both partnerships to reform. The world No. 4 pair, Aaron-Wooi Yik, were the first to have their request approved by the BAM performance committee, chaired by badminton legend Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei. Shortly after, the world No. 11 duo, Wei Chong-Kai Wun, also received confirmation to return to their original pairing.
Herry IP revealed that while an initial plan involved trying new partners until year-end, a committee meeting with players, coaches, and management solidified the decision. The players' strong desire to reunite with their original partners ultimately prevailed, setting the stage for this high-stakes European challenge for Malaysian badminton.
Strategic Shifts: Focus on the Main Goal
In a strategic move, Aaron Chia's planned test run with Tee Kai Wun at the Arctic Open (Oct 6-11) has been scrapped. This withdrawal, along with other reshuffled pairs, is largely due to the tight schedule following the Asian Games (Sept 19-Oct 4) and the definitive decision on partnership reunions.
"The Arctic is too close to the Asian Games. There is only a one-week gap... the preparation time isn't sufficient," explained Herry. Furthermore, with Aaron-Wooi Yik already committed to playing together again, the need for the Arctic Open experiment vanished. While these senior pairs focus on their rejuvenated partnerships, Herry confirms that the reshuffling exercise will continue for several other pairs on the World Tour until the end of the year, signaling a broad approach to developing Malaysian men's doubles talent.
