The Danish Disruptor: How Hummel Is Changing the Game
Hummel has carved out a significant niche by prioritizing speed and adaptability over the slow, rigid models of larger competitors. While traditional companies often operate on annual or biennial windows, Hummel can turn around a custom jersey in as little as six weeks. This agility is a game-changer for smaller clubs looking to connect with their communities.
Conor Caloia, managing partner of Hummel North America and CEO of Forward Madison, highlights this shift: “The kind of previous pro model for many other suppliers was long lead times, high minimums [for purchasers], and restricted customization.” He emphasizes that Hummel is there to “support” clubs like Portland, Boise, and Sacramento as they lead their own design and community storytelling efforts.
Lightning-Fast Production & Flexible Terms
The core of Hummel’s success in the USL lies in its streamlined operations. Large sportswear brands typically demand high minimum orders and long lead times, making it difficult for smaller clubs to innovate or respond quickly to fan demand. Hummel’s looser or non-existent minimums allow teams to create exactly what they want, when they want it, at a relatively low price point.
This flexible approach has proven to be an effective business model for the Danish company, enabling them to establish a strong presence in the United States. It's a testament to collaborative creation, where the best ideas emerge from shared efforts between the brand and the clubs.
Weaving Local Legends: Storytelling Through Kit Design
Without the advanced textile capabilities of its larger rivals, Hummel leans heavily into what it can do exceptionally well: storytelling and graphic customization. The brand understands that a jersey is more than just fabric; it's a canvas for a club's identity and community narrative.
“We have to rely heavily on storytelling,” explains Arsenio Lopez, Art Director for Hummel North America. “We have to rely heavily on the customization of graphics. We have to rely heavily on customer service, too – the intimacy of being able to really speak with the club and the people that are making the decisions and getting deep on what it means to them.” This personal touch ensures each kit tells a unique tale.
From Concept to Kick-Off: The Collaborative Design Process
The design journey with Hummel is deeply collaborative, starting with clubs bringing their narratives and ideas to the table. This initial conversation isn't about existing designs, but about defining the inspirational story behind the kit. Hummel designers then delve deeper, exploring various angles and
