Jayson Tatum gave Celtics fans a glimpse of his recovery from a ruptured Achilles with a media workout, signaling potential reinforcements for Boston later this season.

Jayson Tatum provided Boston Celtics fans with a glimpse of hope for the remainder of the season during a public workout on Monday, eight months after rupturing his Achilles last spring.

Most of Tatum’s rehabilitation has taken place behind closed doors, but the hour-long session at Seaholm High School, ahead of Boston’s game against the Detroit Pistons, allowed fans and media to see his progress firsthand. Assistant coaches, including Tony Dobbins, put Tatum through a series of drills, including shooting off screens, pull-up jumpers, driving through contact, and a few dunks. His skill and athleticism appeared largely intact, reflecting significant recovery since the injury.

Tatum did not comment after the workout, but teammate Derrick White praised the star forward’s progress. “It’s amazing to see,” White said. “All the work he’s put in shows. Being able to do more on the court and move more is exciting. He’s been working hard every day, and it’s great to see that effort paying off.”

While Tatum has expressed his desire to play this season, the Celtics have not provided a timeline for his return. Coach Joe Mazzulla also offered few updates, saying he relies on the strength and sports science staff to manage Tatum’s rehabilitation. “I don’t know exactly where he’s at, but I trust our staff to put him in the best position to succeed,” Mazzulla said.

If Tatum returns this season, he would strengthen a Celtics team that has performed like a contender in his absence. Boston currently sits second in the Eastern Conference with a 26-15 record and ranks second in net rating, boosted by a standout season from Jaylen Brown, who was named an All-Star starter on Monday.

White said Tatum has been eager to get back on the court. “You know he doesn’t want to watch. He wants to play. He’s been amazing supporting us, and it’s great to see him moving and getting ready,” White said.

Tatum’s potential return could provide Boston with a powerful one-two punch alongside Brown as the team aims to make a strong push in the playoffs.
