KUALA LUMPUR: Former great Datuk Rashid Sidek has urged Leong Jun Hao and Justin Hoh to make it an all-Malaysian final in the SEA Games men's singles following the withdrawal of Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand.
Foreign media had reported that 2023 world champion Kunlavut, whose wisdom tooth was removed recently, cited insufficient time to prepare for the individual event and just wants to concentrate on the team event.
This put Singapore's world No. 10 Loh Kean Yew, the 2021 world champion, and Indonesian world No. 17 Alwi Farhan as the players to beat — but it has also opened the door for world No. 29 Jun Hao and world No. 38 Justin to seize a rare chance to strike gold in Bangkok.
"Kunlavut would have been the clear favourite but without him, Jun Hao and Justin should not just aim for medals but fight all the way for gold. An all-Malaysia final is not impossible," said Rashid.

"Of course, Kean Yew has the quality and Alwi has also won titles on the World Tour, but these players are beatable and not as consistent as Kunlavut.
"Upsets are often witnessed at the SEA Games where lesser-known players have won gold, and it is up to Jun Hao and Justin to seize the opportunity.
"Jun Hao has more advantage as he has beaten top-10 players in the past, but Justin can also use the event for a strong international breakthrough. They must remain confident."
Rashid also cautioned the Malaysian duo against two dangermen — world No. 21 Jason Teh and veteran world No. 7 Kantaphon Wangcharoen of Thailand.
"Jason has been doing well while Kantaphon has experience and home-ground support. The duo cannot be taken lightly," Rashid warned.
