Malaysian badminton fans were full of pride after the national team achieved a rare three-title sweep at the Indonesia Masters on Sunday, winning in mixed doubles, women’s doubles, and men’s doubles.
World champions and world No. 4 mixed doubles pair Cheng Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei led the charge, defeating Denmark’s world No. 10 Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Boje in a thrilling three-game final. After dropping the first game 15-21, the Malaysians came back to take the next two 21-17, 21-11, showcasing resilience and determination that drew widespread praise online.
In women’s doubles, Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah were declared champions after Japan’s Arisa Igarashi and Miyu Takahashi withdrew due to Takahashi suffering from a fever. Fans congratulated the Malaysian pair while also wishing Takahashi a speedy recovery.
Completing the sweep, world No. 9 men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani delivered a composed performance to defeat Indonesia’s Raymond Indra and Nikolaus Joaquin 21-19, 21-13 in the final.
