Malaysia’s women’s team will head into the upcoming Uber Cup in Horsens with a clear focus on development rather than immediate results.
With the tournament set to take place from April 24 to May 3, the squad is expected to feature a mix of established names and rising talents. The approach signals a shift towards building depth for the future of Malaysian badminton.
Former international Lee Meng Yean has called on fans to remain patient, noting that many players in the lineup are still gaining experience at the highest level.
“On paper, we can expect at least one point from our doubles pair Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah,” she said. “But beyond them, several are still juniors who need time and exposure to adapt to this level.”
The world-class pairing of Pearly and Thinaah will likely be Malaysia’s strongest asset, but the team’s overall performance will depend on how quickly the younger players can adjust to the demands of top-tier competition.
Badminton Association of Malaysia has yet to confirm the final squad, though the expected selection reflects a long-term strategy aimed at strengthening the national pipeline.
Meng Yean also stressed the importance of unity in a team competition like the Uber Cup, warning against placing blame on individuals.
“We win as a team and lose as a team,” she said. “Even if one department performs, the others still need support.”
Malaysia’s recent record in the tournament highlights the challenge ahead, with the team unable to progress beyond the group stage in the last six editions. Their best results remain quarter-final appearances in 2004, 2008 and 2010.
Despite this, the upcoming campaign offers valuable exposure for younger players. Competing in high-pressure matches is expected to accelerate their development and prepare them for bigger roles in the future.
As Malaysia looks beyond immediate results, the focus remains on building a more competitive team for the years ahead.
