The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) is forming a long-term alliance with top independent players, including Lee Zii Jia, aiming to create a unified national squad for major events up to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Malaysian badminton is entering a new era as the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) forges a historic collaboration with its independent stars. Led by men’s singles sensation Lee Zii Jia, the initiative aims to assemble the strongest national squad in preparation for major tournaments, culminating in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

BAM, under secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh, is actively bridging the gap between national and independent players. The partnership allows independents to participate in national training sessions and selection trials, ensuring Malaysia fields its best talent at international competitions.

Several high-profile independents have already pledged their involvement. Lee Zii Jia will team up with women’s singles star Goh Jin Wei and men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani. Their immediate focus is the prestigious Thomas Cup and Uber Cup in Horsens, Denmark, running from April 24 to May 3.

Preparation is a key part of the plan. Lee Zii Jia has shown interest in joining pre-tournament national training sessions, highlighting the cooperative spirit of the new initiative. BAM is also planning a centralized training camp for the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games (September 19 to October 4), with players arriving early to maximize preparation.

This strategic collaboration aligns with BAM’s long-term vision and is supported by the National Sports Council (NSC), which continues to back the Podium and development programs for 41 elite and emerging players. Coaches will now set tournament-specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to track and enhance performance, with the Asian Games serving as a key milestone on the path to Los Angeles 2028.

By uniting national and independent talent, BAM is laying the foundation for a thrilling new era of Malaysian badminton, combining experience, emerging talent, and a clear focus on Olympic success.
