Man Wei Chong’s knee injury has ruled him and Tee Kai Wun out of key tournaments, including their Malaysia Masters title defence, with surgery now under serious consideration.

Malaysia’s men’s doubles ambitions have suffered a major setback after Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun were forced to withdraw from upcoming tournaments, including their Malaysia Masters title defence, due to a serious knee injury.

The world No. 6 pair, who won the Super 500 event last year against compatriots Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, will not be able to defend their crown as Wei Chong’s ongoing knee problem continues to worsen. The situation now places his short-term future in doubt, with surgery increasingly being considered.

National doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky confirmed the severity of the issue, stating that Wei Chong has not fully recovered and may need to undergo an operation. The injury has already forced the pair to miss important events such as the Singapore Open and Indonesia Open, disrupting their momentum during a key phase of the season.

Wei Chong’s knee issues date back to March, when he revealed multiple complications, including a partial ACL tear, meniscus damage, and cartilage injury. The problem also affected his participation in the Thomas Cup Finals in Denmark, where he was limited to just one group-stage match. During that period, the coaching team was forced to rotate partners for Kai Wun, pairing him with both Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik to manage Wei Chong’s fitness concerns.

With the pair sidelined, Malaysia’s focus now shifts to its remaining men’s doubles line-up. Top-ranked pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik will carry increased expectations at the Malaysia Masters, alongside Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, who are also expected to play a key role.

Other combinations, including Wan Arif Junaidi and Yap Roy King, Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub and Tan Wee Kiong, and younger pairs such as Aaron Tai and Kang Khai Xing, will need to step up. Newly formed partnerships like Teo Ee Yi and Chia Wei Jie, as well as Lwi Sheng Hao and Ong Yew Sin, have also gained unexpected main draw opportunities following the withdrawal.

While the setback to Wei Chong and Kai Wun is significant, it also reshapes the competitive landscape for Malaysia, opening the door for other pairs to seize responsibility and prove themselves on a major home stage.
