Marc Marquez is facing an extended recovery period after a serious crash at the French Grand Prix left him requiring two surgical procedures and ruled out of upcoming races.
The incident occurred during the sprint race at Le Mans, where Marquez suffered a violent highside on the penultimate lap while running in strong contention. The crash resulted in a fracture to the fifth metatarsal in his right foot, forcing immediate medical attention and his withdrawal from the main race.
Following the accident, Marquez was flown to Madrid where he underwent urgent surgery to stabilise the foot injury.
However, doctors also took the opportunity to address a separate long-term issue in the same operation window. The Spanish rider had been managing a chronic right shoulder problem linked to complications from a previous Latarjet procedure in 2019, where displaced screws and a bone fragment were affecting the radial nerve and causing ongoing discomfort.

The shoulder issue had reportedly worsened over recent months and was originally scheduled for treatment later in the season. The crash at Le Mans accelerated the timeline, leading to both procedures being carried out at the Ruber Internacional Hospital in Madrid.
Medical staff successfully completed surgery on both the fractured foot and the shoulder complication, marking a significant but necessary intervention in Marquez’s recovery process.
As a result, Marquez will miss the upcoming Catalan Grand Prix, while his participation in the Italian Grand Prix remains uncertain and will depend on how his rehabilitation progresses.
The setback also impacts his championship campaign. Marquez currently sits seventh in the standings, 71 points behind leader Marco Bezzecchi, significantly reducing his title hopes unless he can return quickly and regain form.
While the surgeries address both immediate and long-standing issues, the coming weeks will be crucial in determining when the MotoGP star can return to competition.
