Singles Dream Takes Precedence at SW19

The path to Grand Slam glory is often fraught with difficult choices, and Marta Kostyuk just made a major one at Wimbledon, opting out of her women's doubles campaign to keep her singles dream burning bright.

  • Marta Kostyuk withdrew from Wimbledon women's doubles due to health concerns.
  • Her partner, Elena-Gabriela Ruse, and opponents, Ellen Perez and Demi Schuurs, received a walkover.
  • Kostyuk remains firmly in the singles draw, eyeing a maiden Grand Slam semi-final.
  • The Ukrainian star cited stomach issues and the pressure of a big singles opportunity as contributing factors.

The Tough Call: Why Doubles Had to Go

Just hours after battling past American qualifier Ashlyn Krueger with a confident 6-4, 6-4 victory to reach her first-ever Wimbledon quarter-final, the Ukrainian sensation made the tough call. Kostyuk has been an undeniable force on tour, lifting her biggest career title in Madrid and making a maiden Grand Slam semi-final at Roland Garros this year. Her form is electric, and the stakes for a singles run at SW19 are incredibly high.

Kostyuk was scheduled to return to No. 2 Court later the same day, partnering Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the women's doubles. However, the No. 9 seeds, Ellen Perez and Demi Schuurs, received a walkover as Kostyuk and Ruse officially withdrew. The decision was not made lightly, and Kostyuk later revealed the underlying issues.

“I did a little mistake and I had problems with my stomach,” Kostyuk explained. “I still experience some problems. I think the heat. It was pretty stressful match for me because I was the one coming into this match with kind of being a favourite, such good opportunity, playing for the first quarter-final here in Wimbledon. Of course, there was more pressure. I think just all these things kind of connected. For sure the heat didn't help.”

Her post-match demeanor after the singles clash hinted at discomfort. Kostyuk spent several minutes on her bench, drinking water, eyes closed, before her on-court interview. This immediate physical feedback likely played a crucial role in prioritizing her health and, ultimately, her singles aspirations.

What's Next for the Ukrainian Star?

This strategic withdrawal means Marta Kostyuk is now singularly focused on her singles journey. The 24-year-old will compete again in two days' time for a coveted spot in the semi-finals. With her recent success and evident determination, fans will be eagerly watching to see if this calculated move pays off with a deeper run into the latter stages of Wimbledon.
