Jorge Martin delivered a statement performance at the French Grand Prix, sweeping both the Sprint and main race victories at Le Mans to strengthen his growing reputation as a serious 2026 MotoGP title contender.
The Spanish rider was in complete control throughout the weekend, showing the speed and composure that once made him one of Ducati’s biggest threats. His impressive double victory also moved him to within one point of Aprilia teammate Marco Bezzecchi in the championship standings.
Martin’s performances did not go unnoticed by former rival Francesco Bagnaia, who believes the Aprilia rider has already re-established himself as a genuine challenger for the world title.
Bagnaia, who lost the 2024 championship battle to Martin in a dramatic finale, said the Spaniard’s return to the front after a difficult 2025 season was highly impressive.
Last season proved to be one of the toughest periods of Martin’s career after he suffered 21 fractures across four separate crashes during his first year with Aprilia. The repeated injuries raised doubts over his future and reportedly even pushed him to consider an early exit from the team.
Despite those setbacks, Martin has returned stronger and more mature this season.
Bagnaia praised both Martin and Aprilia for the way they handled the difficult period.
“Last year was very tough for him,” said Bagnaia. “Having the strength to come back to this level is admirable. Congratulations to him and especially to Aprilia, which supported him incredibly well.”
Fellow MotoGP rider Alex Marquez also admitted he was impressed by Martin’s confidence and fearless riding style despite the injuries he suffered last year.
According to Marquez, Martin appears to have regained the same confidence and sharpness that made him one of the strongest riders on the grid during his Ducati years.
Bagnaia also pointed out that Martin is once again relying on consistency and smart race management, the same qualities that helped him secure the 2024 world title.
“He’s clearly a title contender,” Bagnaia said. “He knows when to push and when to settle for points. That’s one of his biggest strengths.”
The Italian added that Martin looked calm and relaxed throughout the Le Mans weekend, a sign of a rider fully confident in both himself and his machinery.
With momentum building and confidence fully restored, Martin’s remarkable comeback is quickly becoming one of the defining stories of the 2026 MotoGP season.
