Since returning from maternity leave, Elina Svitolina has found a new balance on and off the court. The Ukrainian star credits motherhood and mental clarity for her resurgence, highlighted by a 19th WTA title and a Top 10 return.

Elina Svitolina’s return to the WTA Tour is defined not just by wins, but by a new perspective. Before her opening match at the Qatar TotalEnergies Open, where she defeated countrywoman Dayana Yastremska 6-1, 6-4, Svitolina spent the morning with her daughter, Skaï, enjoying a calm breakfast by the promenade. This unconventional pre-match routine reflects the balance she has cultivated since returning from maternity leave in 2023.

"When you’re all the time in the same routine, it’s nice to have something different," Svitolina said. "We’re not home very often but we can bring family with us. It makes us feel at home, and these moments really warm my heart." This sense of personal peace has become a secret weapon, allowing her to approach competition with renewed focus.

For years, the pressure to win a Grand Slam weighed heavily on Svitolina. She credits work with a sports psychologist and the perspective motherhood brought her for lightening that burden. "After giving birth, I realized I am okay to live my life after tennis without having won a Grand Slam," she explained.

This mental reset has translated into on-court success. Svitolina has captured her 19th WTA title, embarked on a 10-match winning streak, and reached her first Australian Open semifinal in years, defeating Coco Gauff along the way and returning to the Top 10. After her loss to world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, she strategically took a week off, arriving in the Middle East refreshed and focused, prepared to perform at her best.

Her journey is also deeply tied to her homeland. The Olympic bronze medalist embraces her role as a leader for Ukraine, mentoring rising stars such as Oleksandra Oliynykova and inspiring hope through sport. Beyond the court, Svitolina plans to launch a tennis academy and padel club in Ukraine, aiming to provide opportunities for young athletes and outlets for her countrymen.

Unburdened by past expectations, Svitolina remains a formidable competitor. "I feel like I have a chance," she said. "My game really improved and I can win matches and challenge big players. When I’m fit and mentally ready, I can compete at the highest level."

For Svitolina, the most rewarding victories often happen off the court, with Skaï by her side. Motherhood has not only reshaped her life but also redefined her approach to tennis, proving that balance and perspective can fuel peak performance.
