Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah overcame a three-year Badminton Asia Championships drought with a strong first-round win, building confidence and momentum ahead of the Uber Cup.

Malaysian women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah delivered a confident start at the Badminton Asia Championships in Ningbo, China, overcoming early hurdles and breaking a three-year winless streak at the event. Their performance provides a vital morale boost for the Malaysian squad and strengthens their preparation for the upcoming Uber Cup.

The world No. 2 duo faced Hong Kong’s Fan Ka Yan and Yau Mau Ying, ranked 50th, in their opening match. After a brief struggle to find their rhythm, Pearly-Thinaah quickly regained control, securing a 21-14, 21-11 victory at the Ningbo Olympic Sports Centre. “At the start, a few simple things went wrong, but we discussed and refocused to improve our performance,” Thinaah explained, highlighting the importance of mid-match adjustments.

This victory marks the end of a frustrating three-year BAC spell in which the pair repeatedly exited in early rounds, often against top opponents like Japan’s Mayu Matsumoto-Wakana Nagahara or South Korea’s Kim Hye Jeong-Kong Hee Yong. Breaking this continental hurdle is a significant psychological boost, demonstrating their resilience and growth on the international stage.

Looking ahead, Pearly-Thinaah now turn their attention to Taiwan’s Hsu Yin Hui and Lin Jhih Yun, world No. 12, in the second round. The Malaysian pair hold a 2-0 head-to-head advantage, suggesting a favorable matchup as they aim to advance further in the tournament.

The win also serves a strategic purpose, giving the duo valuable match practice ahead of the Uber Cup, scheduled for April 24 to May 3 in Horsens, Denmark. “We are trying to regain the feel of tournament play. This win is important to boost our confidence and help us perform better at the Uber Cup,” Pearly said, underlining the importance of strong performances leading into the team event.
