Jessica Pegula delivered a significant performance at the BNP Paribas Open, defeating Belinda Bencic for the first time in her career to advance further in the tournament.
Heading into the match, Pegula had lost all four previous meetings with the Swiss player. This time, however, the American fifth seed produced a composed and tactically strong display to secure a 6-3, 7-6 (5) victory and finally break the streak.
Pegula established control early in the contest, taking the opening set 6-3 in just 44 minutes. She matched Bencic’s flat, aggressive shot-making while maintaining better consistency from the baseline. Her ability to place the ball precisely and force errors allowed her to dictate the tempo of the match.
Conditions in Indian Wells added another layer of difficulty. The desert venue is known for its combination of dry air, swirling winds, and slow courts, which can make controlling the ball challenging. Pegula adapted well to the environment, adjusting her movement and shot selection to maintain stability during longer rallies.
The second set proved more competitive. Pegula moved ahead 2-0 before Bencic responded and gradually worked her way back into the match. The American also missed an opportunity to close out the contest while serving at 5-4, allowing Bencic to force a tiebreak.
In the decisive moments, Pegula showed strong composure. A well-timed lob followed by a delicate backhand drop shot helped her build a 6-3 advantage in the tiebreak. She then sealed the victory with a powerful inside-out forehand winner to complete the straight-sets win.
The result sends Pegula into the quarterfinals, where she will face Elena Rybakina. The reigning Australian Open champion holds a narrow 4-3 advantage in their head-to-head record and has won their last two meetings.
Pegula enters the matchup with strong momentum. She has reached the semifinals in eight consecutive WTA tournaments and recently captured the Dubai title with victories over several Top 20 players. That consistency has become a defining feature of her game as she continues her push for another deep run at Indian Wells.
