At just 20 years old, Tan Kean Wei is already proving he belongs on the big stage after a strong run at the Vietnam International Challenge and rapid adaptation to Malaysia’s national training environment.

Tan Kean Wei is starting to turn heads in Malaysian badminton. The 20‑year‑old has shown he can compete with higher‑ranked players and is quickly making his mark within the national squad.

Kean Wei delivered a breakthrough performance at the Vietnam International Challenge in Hanoi last week. Starting from the qualifying rounds, he advanced to the quarter‑finals, defeating several players ranked well above him along the way. Notably, he upset South Korea’s Park Sang‑yong, then beat Bharath Lathessh of the United Arab Emirates and India’s Satish Kumar before his run was ended by South Korea’s Kim Hae‑deun.

What makes his showing all the more impressive is that this was only his third tournament of the year and one of his first since joining the national squad in mid‑February. World No. 228 Kean Wei credited the structured training environment and support from the Badminton Association of Malaysia coaching team and his new teammates for helping him settle in so quickly.

“I am happy to be part of the national squad,” he said, noting that training has been tough but of high quality. He also praised his teammates for being friendly and the coaches for helping him recognise his strengths and areas for improvement.

Kean Wei began playing badminton at age six and has already set clear goals for his career. Inspired by world‑class players such as Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn, he aims first to break into the top 100 in the world rankings, with ambitions to climb further from there.

His rapid progress and confidence on the international stage suggest he could be one of Malaysia’s exciting prospects in the years ahead.
