KUALA LUMPUR: Former world No. 1 Roslin Hashim has left Malaysian shores to take on a new role as the head coach of Egypt beginning this month.

The former top Malaysian singles shuttler has been tasked to groom Egyptian players for three years leading up to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Roslin described the job as a challenging role in a country where football and squash are the top two sports, and where their badminton players are largely unheard of on the global stage.

"This is a huge challenge — I'm taking on a new scope of work. If you look at the responsibilities I have to shoulder, they are not easy," said Roslin.

"I'm not only going there as a coach, but also as a technical director and head coach. A big responsility but I will try my very best for my career."

Roslin said the offer from the Egypt Badminton Federation (EBF) is aimed at helping develop the sport in the African nation.

"The level of badminton is not very high there, and my challenge is also to take the Egyptian shuttlers out of their comfort zone," said the former Nu sa Mahsuri player.

The 50-year-old Roslin also seems to be following in the footsteps of his younger brother, Hafiz Hashim, who became the head coach of Saudi Arabia in August.
