The Philippines defeated Malaysia 83-58 in a Group A men’s 5x5 basketball clash at Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok, showcasing their dominance in the opening match. As 19-time SEA Games champions, the Gilas are set to advance straight to the semi-finals if they beat Vietnam on Monday. The quarter-finals are slated for Wednesday, with the semi-finals on Thursday.

Group B features Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, and Myanmar, with 2021 champions Indonesia currently topping the group after one win and one loss.

Malaysia played their second match, holding a 1-1 record after beating Vietnam 89-63 on Saturday. The visitors initially led the first quarter 26-22, but the Philippines responded with a 20-0 run in the second quarter, powered by Thirdy Ravena and Ray Parks, taking a 42-26 lead that they would maintain. Malaysia narrowed the gap to 46-39 in the third quarter, but in the fourth, Jamie Malonzo contributed a crucial three-pointer, helping the Philippines seal the win.
