Malaysia’s mixed doubles campaign at the Badminton Asia Championships came to a sudden halt after both of their remaining pairs were eliminated in the Last 16, marking a disappointing day for the national camp.
The biggest setback came from the world No. 11 pair Goh Soon Huat–Shevon Lai, who were beaten by Taiwan’s Chen Cheng Kuan–Hsu Yin Hui. Despite showing resilience by taking the second game 21-15, the Malaysian duo were unable to maintain momentum in the decider and eventually went down 10-21, 21-15, 21-16.
The defeat is especially disappointing for the experienced husband-and-wife pair, who had reached the quarter-finals at the same venue in the previous edition. Their early exit this time raises questions over consistency at major championships, particularly against lower-ranked opponents capable of causing upsets.
Malaysia’s second challenge in the round also ended in straight games, as world No. 34 Wong Tien Ci–Lim Chiew Sien were overpowered by China’s second-seeded pair Guo Xin Wa–Chen Fang Hui. The Chinese duo dominated from start to finish, sealing a comfortable 21-8, 21-14 victory.
While the draw was always a difficult one for the Malaysian pair, the comprehensive nature of the defeat highlighted the gap in consistency and execution when facing top-tier opposition.
With both pairs now out of the competition, Malaysia’s mixed doubles challenge at the championships has effectively ended earlier than anticipated. The results add further pressure on the national setup to reassess performance levels ahead of upcoming international tournaments, where consistency against both higher and lower-ranked opponents will be crucial.
