The Sibu Pickleball Association is progressing the Bukit Lima Pickleball Arena project, an 8-court complex backed by key local authorities and moving steadily toward construction approval.

The Sibu Pickleball Revolution: New Arena & Youth Push Takes Off

Sibu is aggressively building a lasting legacy for the sport, signaling a new era for Malaysian pickleball. With a massive dedicated arena on the horizon and an already thriving youth development program, the Sibu Pickleball Association (SPA) is setting an incredible benchmark for growth.

Key Milestones in Sibu's Pickleball Ascent

  • Bukit Lima Pickleball Arena: A RM5.8 million dedicated facility with 8 courts is in advanced planning stages, backed by robust government support.
  • Youth Development Focus: Pickleball clubs established in 13 secondary schools across Sibu, pioneering inter-school championships in Malaysia.
  • Strategic Leadership: Joseph Chieng, Bukit Asek assemblyman and SPA President, is driving both infrastructure and grassroots expansion.
  • Rapid Expansion: The Sibu Pickleball Association, founded in January 2024, already boasts 7 affiliated clubs.

The Grand Vision: Bukit Lima Arena Takes Shape

The ambition is palpable: a two-storey, 8-court Bukit Lima Pickleball Arena is moving steadily through the approval process. Backed by the Sibu Municipal Council and Sarawak Sports Corporation, this meticulously planned project is moving closer to construction as initial siting has been cleared and final approvals are underway.

Crucially, Joseph Chieng, a prominent local assemblyman and SPA President, has committed RM5.8 million in Rural Transformation Project funding for Phase 1. This significant financial injection underscores the government's belief in Sibu's pickleball future and ensures the arena will become a reality, solidifying Sibu as a regional hub for the sport.

Building from the Ground Up: Investing in Youth

While the arena grabs headlines, the SPA's commitment to youth development is arguably its most impactful long-term strategy. On 30 April 2025, the association launched pickleball clubs in 11 secondary schools in the Sibu district, quickly expanding to 13 schools with essential equipment sponsorship.

This grassroots effort culminated in the 2025 Sibu Division Inter-Secondary Schools Pickleball Championship – a groundbreaking event, believed to be the first of its kind in Malaysia, attracting 16 teams. The momentum continues with the 2nd championship slated for July 4–5, and the inaugural Sarawak U18 Inter-Division Pickleball Championship tentatively set for July 25–26, further cementing Sibu's role in nurturing young talent.

A Proactive Association with Clear Vision

The Sibu Pickleball Association, though less than two years old, operates with the dynamism of a seasoned organization. President Joseph Chieng was recently reelected for the 2026–2027 term, affirming strong leadership. SPA, established in January 2024, now comprises 7 affiliated clubs: Lanang, Dudong, Bukit Assek, Pelawan, Iplay Swan Squad, Mighty Titan, and Smashkin Blaze.

This robust club structure provides a solid foundation for both competitive play and community engagement. From its rapid establishment in 2024, the SPA has orchestrated an impressive array of initiatives, from school programs to championship events, all while pushing for world-class infrastructure.

Sibu's Blueprint for Pickleball Dominance

By strategically investing in a dedicated arena and fostering an energetic youth program, Sibu is crafting a compelling blueprint for how to grow a sport with purpose and passion. The world of Malaysian pickleball should take note: Sibu is just getting started.
