Veteran Malaysian mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai Jemie return to the German Open with hopes of recapturing past success, drawing on experience and unity as they prepare for the Super 1000 tournament.

Malaysia’s mixed doubles veterans Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai Jemie are back in action at the German Open, a tournament that holds fond memories for the experienced pairing.

The duo’s connection with the German Open goes back eight years, when they claimed their first major title together in Mulheim. That victory, one of their earliest career successes, came soon after they were initially paired and helped establish their partnership on the world stage.

Now aged 36 and 33 respectively, Soon Huat and Shevon are looking to draw on their experience as they compete in this year’s edition of the prestigious Super 1000 event. Since their breakthrough, the Malaysian pair have added several titles to their record, including the Singapore Open in 2018 and more recent wins at the Swiss Open and Malaysian Masters in 2024.

Despite their achievements, the road has not always been smooth and maintaining form against younger competitors remains a challenge. “Even eight years after winning the German Open, we are still fighting to keep our career going. It has not been easy,” Soon Huat said, highlighting the couple’s ongoing commitment to the sport.

Shevon echoed similar thoughts, acknowledging the rising strength of emerging pairs and emphasising a renewed focus on enjoying competition and executing strong performances.

The pair are scheduled to play in the qualifying round, with a difficult opening match likely against local fourth seeds Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Boje.

Alongside reflecting on past success, Soon Huat and Shevon view the German Open as an opportunity to reset their campaign and build momentum as the international badminton season continues.
