KUALA LUMPUR: Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai saw their Malaysia Open campaign cut short on Thursday, and circumstances, more than form, told the story.
The world No. 9 were beaten 21-9, 21-17 in the last 16 by American world No. 32 Presley Smith-Jennie Gai at Axiata Arena, a result that ended hopes of a return to the semi-finals after last year's strong run.
On paper, it was a genuine opportunity.
In reality, Shevon was still battling the after-effects of food poisoning that had already left her vomiting the night before their opening match.
Soon Huat admitted they were fighting more than just opponents.
"My partner's condition is not 100%. There were many simple mistakes today," he said.
"We kept changing tactics, but it still didn't work. When the shuttle came to her side, she had to keep it steady first before I could find chances to attack — and we were always chasing."
He added that Shevon struggled to maintain focus on court.
"She totally couldn't focus. There was some diarrhoea, but it's better than yesterday. Maybe yesterday's condition affected today's match, probably the body needs more time to recover."
Despite the straight-games defeat, Soon Huat refused to dwell on disappointment.
"I just tried to cover as much as I could and get more points. Today, I just tried to win, but it wasn't enough."
With India Open and Indonesia Masters next on the schedule, the priority is clear.
"First, we take care of her body and recovery. We will still train, but we will adjust the programme. Then we focus on India."
