Pickleball Powers Up Community Safety

Forget the scores – Subang Jaya just redefined what a sports event can achieve, turning a pickleball marathon into a monumental win for community safety and public health!

Key Achievements from the Marathon:

  • Subang Jaya's 28-hour Pickleball Charity Marathon united the community for a vital cause.
  • A brand-new Automated External Defibrillator (AED) was installed at the SS15 Community Hall, enhancing emergency response.
  • Critical CPR and AED training sessions empowered residents with life-saving skills.
  • Over RM20,000 was raised to support the indispensable Subang Jaya Community Ambulance (SJ Beacon).

The recent Pickleball Charity Marathon was far more than just a game; it was a powerful statement on community self-reliance. Organized by MBSJ councillor Ken Chia, MySJClub, and Subang Jaya Community Ambulance (SJ Beacon), the event saw residents rallying for a cause that hits close to home.

Crucially, the marathon served as the platform for unveiling a new AED at the SS15 community hall. This isn't just about having equipment; it's about accessibility and preparedness. Alongside the lively games, vital CPR and AED training sessions equipped participants with the confidence to act in an emergency.

A Game-Changer for Emergency Preparedness

Selangor's public health and environment committee chairman, Jamaliah Jamaluddin, lauded the initiative, highlighting its genuine impact. She stressed that installing the AED alongside comprehensive training demonstrated a true understanding of community needs. This grassroots effort, she affirmed, sets a benchmark for local empowerment.

This immediate access to an AED and trained individuals marks a significant upgrade in local emergency response. It transforms potential tragedies into opportunities for survival, proving that community-driven initiatives can have profound, life-altering consequences.

Councillor Chia's Personal Connection

For Councillor Ken Chia, the Pickleball Charity Marathon held deeply personal significance. Having lost 18kg over the past year through playing the sport, he champions pickleball not just for fitness, but for its power to forge stronger community bonds.

He vividly recalled a player collapsing during a game at the very hall now equipped with the AED. That incident underscored the urgent need for on-site emergency medical devices, making the new defibrillator a beacon of relief for players and residents alike.

SJ Beacon: A Vital Community Lifeline

SJ Beacon, a non-profit organization, truly embodies the spirit of community service. The charity marathon was their first foray into pickleball, and the substantial funds raised, exceeding RM20,000, will be crucial for their operations.

Running this indispensable ambulance service costs roughly RM25,000 a month. SJ Beacon responds to between 90 and 100 calls monthly, operating daily from 8 am to 8 pm. Their work significantly alleviates pressure on the Health Ministry's ambulance services, especially during crises like the Covid-19 pandemic.

The success of this event paves the way for future fundraisers across different sports, as SJ Beacon representative Teoh Teik Hoong hopes. With an AED now ready at SS15 and bolstered funding for dedicated ambulances, this Subang Jaya pickleball tournament will be remembered as a true victory for collective well-being.
