KUALA LUMPUR: Men's doubles Arif Junaidi-Yap Roy King advanced to the second round of the Malaysia Open on Wednesday after defeating Choi Sol-gyu-Goh V Shem at Axiata Arena.
The world No. 17 won 22-20, 21-12, avenging their second-round loss to the world No. 44 Korean-Malaysian pairing at last year's Australian Open.
Arif said the victory carried extra meaning after the pair let a strong position slip in their previous meeting.
"I'm grateful we managed to get revenge. In Australia, we were also leading but lost focus. Today we stayed calmer and finished it off," he said.
Arif-Junaidi, who were last year's Macau Open champions, trailed 17-12 in the first game before staging a comeback.
They then dominated the second game to secure the win.
Roy King said communication was key to the turnaround.
"We trusted one another and communicated well during the important points. That helped us turn it around," he said.
Reaching the second round marks a step forward for the pair, who exited in the first round on their debut last year.
"Reaching the second round is a bonus, but we don't want to stop here. We will try our best again tomorrow," Arif said.
The pair will next face India's world No. 3 Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty, a pairing they have yet to beat in three meetings.
"We have nothing to lose. We'll enjoy the game. If it's meant to be ours, then it is. If not, we'll try again next time," Arif added.
