Dominik Szoboszlai has confirmed contract talks with Liverpool have stalled, leaving his long-term future at Anfield uncertain despite his key role in the team’s strong season.

Contract Talks Stall for Red Star

Dominik Szoboszlai has confirmed that negotiations over a new contract at Liverpool have made little progress, despite his growing importance to the team. The Hungarian midfielder currently has just over two years remaining on his deal, which runs until 2028, but admitted that discussions have not moved forward as expected during the closing stages of the 2025–26 season.

“There has been no real progression, so I cannot say anything new about my contract situation,” Szoboszlai said after Liverpool’s dramatic 2-1 Merseyside derby win over Everton. He stressed that his focus remains on the remaining fixtures, adding that while he is ready to give his all week by week, his long-term future remains uncertain.

Future uncertainty shifts focus to Liverpool

Although Szoboszlai reiterated that he sees himself staying at Anfield long-term and remains happy at the club, he suggested that any decision now rests with Liverpool’s hierarchy. He described the situation as being out of his control, despite expressing satisfaction with life in the city and the club environment.

“I love being here. I love the fans. My family is happy,” he said, while noting that he plans to reassess everything after the season and his international commitments.

Key role despite off-field noise

The contract situation comes shortly after Szoboszlai dealt with fan tension following a public apology over a heated reaction during a heavy defeat to Manchester City. However, he appears to have moved past the incident and remains central to Liverpool’s campaign.

On the pitch, his influence has been significant, with 12 goals and nine assists in 48 appearances across all competitions. His latest contribution was the corner that led to Virgil van Dijk’s 100th-minute winner against Everton, a result that strengthened Liverpool’s push for a top-five finish.

European qualification the priority

With Liverpool out of all cup competitions, the focus is now fully on securing a top-five Premier League finish to guarantee Champions League qualification. Szoboszlai said the derby win provided a major lift but stressed the importance of maintaining consistency, urging the squad to stay grounded and continue working hard as the season reaches its final stretch.
