KUALA LUMPUR: World champions Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei delivered a strong response as two of Malaysia’s four mixed doubles pairs advanced to the second round of the Indonesia Masters on Wednesday.
Third seeds Tang Jie-Ee Wei overcame a tough challenge from China’s young duo Zhu Yi Jun-Li Qian, winning 21-19, 20-22, 21-10 at Istora Senayan in Jakarta. World No. 4 Tang Jie-Ee Wei were eager to stabilize their season after only reaching the quarter-finals at the Malaysia Open and exiting in the first round at last week’s India Open.
The pair faced pressure in the second game, giving up four match points at 20-16, but regrouped quickly in the decider to avoid consecutive early exits—a first since forming their partnership in late 2022. They will next meet either Thailand’s Pakkapon Teeraratsakul-Sapsiree Taerattanachai or Indonesia’s Amri Syahnawi-Nita Violina Marwah. Tang Jie-Ee Wei were quarter-finalists at this tournament last year.
Also advancing were world No. 20 Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin, who recovered from a slow start to defeat Thailand’s Phuwanat Horbanluekit-Benyapa Aimsaard 13-21, 21-6, 21-17. In contrast, world No. 11 Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai suffered a heartbreaking loss, squandering four match points to go down 18-21, 21-18, 22-20 to Indonesia’s world No. 24 Adnan Maulana-Indah Cahya Sari Jamil. Independent pair Jimmy Wong-Lai Pei Jing also exited after a 21-10, 21-17 defeat to Dejan Ferdinansyah-Bernadine Anindiya Wardana.
