KUALA LUMPUR: Kunlavut Vitidsarn's breakthrough Malaysia Open title carried the quiet influence of Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei, with the Thai shuttler crediting the Malaysian great for advice that helped him handle pressure on and off the court.

The Thai lifted his first Super 1000 title today after China's world No. 1 Shi Yu Qi retired during men's singles final at Axiata Arena with a back problem.

Former world champion Kunlavut also took home US$101,500 (RM413,257) in prize money.

Kunlavut had edged a tense first game 23-21 and was leading 6-1 in the second when defending champion Yu Qi signalled he could not continue.

While the manner of victory was unexpected, Kunlavut said the guidance he has received from Chong Wei, who presented the trophy, has been crucial to his career.

"I thank Lee Chong Wei for always giving me advice when I have a problem or worry," Kunlavut said after the final.

"He gave me good advice on how to prepare and how to control everything on the court or outside the court."

The 24-year-old admitted the Malaysia Open final tested him mentally as much as physically, describing the experience of playing his first Super 1000 final as both exciting and pressurised.

Kunlavut also showed sportsmanship, expressing concern for Yu Qi after the top seed was forced to stop. "I hope he's healthy and gets better soon," he said.

On his future targets, Kunlavut said: "I want to win the world title, Olympic gold and All England."

In the mixed doubles final, China's world No. 1 Feng Yan Zhe-Huang Dong Ping defeated world No. 2 compatriots Jiang Zhen Bang-Wei Ya Xin 21-19, 21-19 to win their first Malaysia Open title.
