Verstappen Calms 'Knocked Knees' Concern
After a grueling race, the eagle-eyed David Coulthard observed Verstappen "moving a little gingerly" in parc fermé. This immediately raised flags about a potential injury for the Red Bull star. However, Verstappen quickly downplayed any worries, simply stating he had "knocked my knees. You know, hit the bones." He assured everyone it was "not very nice, but today was okay," emphasizing his fitness wasn't an issue for the strong performance.
Red Bull Unleashes Newfound Power at Home
Beyond the fleeting physical discomfort, the dominant narrative for Red Bull was their immense leap in performance. The team's recent upgrades, specifically bringing the car down to its target weight, proved transformative at their home track. Verstappen wasn't just competitive; he was, at times, the quickest man on track across the 71 laps around the Red Bull Ring. This signals a significant turning point, injecting fresh hope into their season.
The Battle for the Top Step: Strategy's Crucial Role
For a significant portion of the race, it appeared Verstappen was genuinely taking the fight to eventual winner George Russell. He closed the gap to within a second during the middle stint, pushing the Mercedes driver hard. However, a critical strategic misjudgment by Red Bull proved costly.
The decision to extend Verstappen's time on those tires for too long allowed Russell to pull away. By the time Verstappen pitted for fresh rubber, he had slipped to more than 10 seconds adrift. This breathing room allowed Russell to manage his tires, brakes, and engine, preserving his car for the latter stages. Despite Verstappen's renewed charge, he never got close enough to make a move for the win, even spending the final laps defending against a late surge from Kimi Antonelli, who finished just three-tenths of a second behind.
Optimism Soars Despite Silverware Miss
Despite missing out on the top step, Verstappen was palpably positive about the progress. "I think it was a very good race for us," he commented, noting the car was in a "good window for, I would say, half of the race." He did admit to "picking up a few issues with the car" which hampered his rhythm later on, but stressed that finishing "second, that close to a win, I think is extremely positive for us."
George Russell, meanwhile, savored his hard-fought victory. "It's incredible to be back on the top step," he beamed, acknowledging the "lot of hard work with my team." He also graciously credited Max and Red Bull, stating they were "incredibly quick this weekend" and he had to push "every single lap."
