KUALA LUMPUR: Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun secured a clinical 21-17, 21-18 victory over Danish veterans Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen in the first round of the Malaysia Open on Tuesday.

The world No. 35 needed only 42 minutes at their fortress — Axiata Arena — to avenge their Singapore Open quarter-final loss to the world No. 10 Danes last year.

It was their sixth consecutive victory at the venue following their Malaysia Masters title win last year.

Wei Chong-Kai Wun will face world No. 26 Hiroki Midorikawa-Kyohei Yamashita of Japan in the second round on Thursday.

"I feel happy because we lost a close fight against them in Singapore. This time they also played well and scored by finding open spaces, but we managed to outplay them," said Wei Chong.

"We have another match in two days, so we will just focus on preparing for the Japanese pair."

The Malaysians are looking to settle another score, having lost to Midorikawa-Yamashita at the Kumamoto Masters in November.

"We need to prepare well because every opponent in this tournament is strong. It is hard to predict a winner, everything depends on the performance on the day. The pair that is more consistent will win," Wei Chong added.

Kai Wun said maintaining composure early in the match was the key to their opening-round success.

"I feel in the first game, we need to focus on being consistent. Only then can we disrupt their rhythm and start scoring points," said Kai Wun Midorikawa-Yamashita, who finished runners-up at the Kumamoto Masters, are coached by former Malaysian doubles star Lee Wan Wah.
