Malaysia’s Wong Ling Ching continued her encouraging run of form with a confident performance at the Swiss Open in Basel, strengthening her bid to become the country’s highest ranked women’s singles player. The world No. 37 delivered a composed display to defeat Taiwan’s Huang Yu Hsun, ranked No. 31, with a convincing 21–14, 21–9 victory. The win also extended Ling Ching’s perfect record against the Taiwanese player to four victories from four meetings.
The 22 year old has shown steady improvement this season. She reached the semi finals of the Thailand Masters earlier this year and followed that result with a quarter final appearance at the German Open. With fellow Malaysian K. Letshanaa suffering an early exit in Switzerland, Ling Ching now has an opportunity to move up the rankings. A strong run in Basel could see her overtake Letshanaa and become Malaysia’s top ranked women’s singles player.
Letshanaa’s campaign ended in the opening round after a closely contested match against Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan. The eighth seeded Thai secured a 23–21, 14–21, 21–14 victory, extending her winning streak against the Malaysian to four matches. The result also marked Letshanaa’s second consecutive first round exit after her early elimination at the German Open.
Malaysia did find some success in the mixed doubles competition thanks to Jimmy Wong and Lai Pei Jing. The world No. 23 pair produced a determined performance to defeat Denmark’s Rasmus Espersen and Amalie Cecilie Kudsk 21–18, 22–20. The second game proved particularly tense as the Malaysians fought back from a deficit before holding their nerve in the closing stages to secure the win.
Other Malaysian pairs, however, struggled to progress. Hoo Pang Ron and Cheng Su Yin suffered another early exit after losing 21–19, 26–24 to China’s Zhu Yi Jun and Li Qian. The defeat marked their fifth first round loss in nine tournaments on the BWF World Tour, underlining their recent difficulties in producing consistent results.
Independent duo Wong Tien Ci and Lim Chiew Sien also fell short after losing 17–21, 21–17, 21–14 to Thailand’s Pakkapon Teeraratsakul and Sapsiree Taerattanachai. The pair are still searching for their first win on the European leg after an early exit at the All England Open. As the Swiss Open continues, attention will remain on Ling Ching as she looks to build on her strong start and continue her climb in the international rankings.
