Lee Zii Jia sealed a 3-2 comeback win for Malaysia over England in Horsens after a tense tie that tested the team’s depth and resilience.

Malaysia’s campaign at the Thomas Cup began with a tense 3-2 victory over England in Horsens, Denmark, as Lee Zii Jia produced the decisive win in a dramatic team contest.

The tie started on a difficult note for Malaysia after Justin Hoh was drafted in for the opening singles match instead of Leong Jun Hao. Hoh put up a fight but lost 21-19, 21-19 to England’s Harry Huang, giving England an early advantage and putting Malaysia under pressure.

Malaysia responded in the men’s doubles through their experienced pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, who levelled the tie with a 21-19, 21-13 win over Oliver Butler and Samuel Jones.

However, England regained the lead when Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin was defeated 21-16, 21-15 by Cholan Kayan, leaving Malaysia trailing 2-1 and facing the possibility of an early upset.

The pressure intensified, but Malaysia’s second doubles pair Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun kept the team alive with a composed 21-14, 21-14 victory, setting up a decisive final match.

In the deciding rubber, Zii Jia delivered a commanding performance, defeating Nadeem Dalvi 21-13, 21-11 to secure the overall tie for Malaysia.

The result ensured Malaysia avoided an opening defeat, although the close contest highlighted inconsistencies in the singles lineup. Despite the pressure, Zii Jia remained calm in his unfamiliar third singles role and credited his focus and experience for helping him close out the tie.

Malaysia now turn their attention to their next group match against Finland, where they will look to build momentum and deliver a more controlled performance after a nervy start to their campaign.
