Malaysia’s hopes of naming a full-strength Thomas Cup squad hinge on the decision of independent shuttler Lee Zii Jia, who has set out several conditions before confirming his participation in this year’s Finals in Horsens, Denmark. The team championship runs from April 24 to May 3.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has acknowledged Zii Jia’s requests and has given him one week to decide whether he will represent the nation at the prestigious world team event. A final answer is expected by Friday.
BAM performance committee chairman Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei confirmed that discussions with the former All England champion were constructive, and that the association has provided feedback on the terms put forward by Zii Jia.
Zii Jia’s negotiations follow controversy during the 2024 Thomas Cup in Chengdu, when his camp reportedly sought compensation tied to image rights for representing Malaysia. The move drew mixed reactions and sparked debate over the balance between commercial demands and national duty.
Chong Wei has stressed the urgency of Zii Jia’s response as BAM finalises its squad list for submission to the Badminton World Federation in April. He believes the 27-year-old’s inclusion would strengthen Malaysia’s singles lineup, potentially playing second or third singles to balance the team’s chances in Horsens.
While most players eagerly seize the opportunity to compete in team events like the Thomas Cup, Zii Jia’s conditions highlight the evolving dynamics between independent professionals and national governing bodies in modern badminton.
BAM will continue preparations with or without Zii Jia as it aims to assemble its strongest possible squad for the Finals.
