Alexander Zverev delivered a dominant straight-sets win in Munich to reach the BMW Open quarterfinals, while challengers Francisco Cerúndolo, Denis Shapovalov and Alex Molčan also advanced in an action-packed day.

Alexander Zverev continued his strong run on home soil with a commanding performance at the BMW Open in Munich, moving one step closer to a potential fourth title at the event.

The top seed needed just 73 minutes to dispatch Canada’s Gabriel Diallo in straight sets, controlling the match from start to finish on Centre Court. Zverev was particularly efficient behind his first serve, winning 83 percent of those points, while also converting five of eight break-point opportunities and saving the only break point he faced.

Although Diallo was hampered by a back issue, Zverev’s level remained steady throughout, reflecting a focused display in front of an energetic home crowd.

The win also added to an already positive week for the German, who attended Bayern Munich’s Champions League quarterfinal victory over Real Madrid at the Allianz Arena earlier in the tournament, sharing the experience with family and enjoying a strong atmosphere both on and off the court.

Next up for Zverev is a quarterfinal clash with Francisco Cerúndolo, who has been in impressive form on clay this season. The Argentine eased past Botic van de Zandschulp 6-3, 6-0, securing his tenth clay-court win of the year.

Cerúndolo, a proven clay specialist, will pose a different challenge for Zverev. The German leads their head-to-head 4-3, but has yet to beat him on clay, setting up a tactical test between Zverev’s power and Cerúndolo’s comfort on the surface.

Elsewhere in the draw, qualifier Alex Molčan continued his impressive comeback run with a hard-fought win over Daniel Altmaier. The Slovakian, once ranked as high as world No. 38, has now won four matches this week as he continues rebuilding his career after injury setbacks.

Denis Shapovalov also progressed, defeating Fabian Marozsan in straight sets to reach his first clay-court quarterfinal since 2022. His return to form adds another strong contender to the latter stages of the tournament.

Away from the ATP action, Munich is also hosting the upgraded Allianz Para Trophy, which features both Open and Quad divisions. Top wheelchair tennis players have praised the event’s high standards and atmosphere, highlighting its growing status alongside the main draw.

As the BMW Open moves into its decisive rounds, Zverev remains the focal point, but with in-form challengers emerging, the path to the title is shaping up to be far from straightforward.
