Aleix Espargaro has been released from hospital after undergoing complex surgery following a heavy crash that he has called the worst of his career.
The incident occurred during a MotoGP test in Sepang, where the Spaniard suffered significant injuries, including fractures to four vertebrae. The severity of the damage required a lengthy and delicate operation, which lasted several hours and was carried out after he returned to Spain for further evaluation.
After days in hospital, Espargaro confirmed he is now back home and beginning the next phase of his recovery. Despite the physical toll, he revealed that the mental challenge proved even harder to deal with.
“It was the worst fall of my sporting career,” he said, describing the injury as serious and the surgery as complicated. He added that the most difficult aspect was not the pain, but the fear and the feeling of helplessness, especially as his family had to adjust to his condition and limitations.
The crash has temporarily halted his role as a Honda test rider, with recovery expected to take time and rehabilitation set to be gradual. While no clear timeline has been given for his return, the priority remains his full physical recovery.
Espargaro also took the opportunity to thank his family for their support throughout the ordeal, highlighting the emotional strain that accompanied the injury. His message reflected both relief at leaving hospital and awareness of the long road ahead.
The accident is another reminder of the risks involved in MotoGP, even outside of race weekends. For Espargaro, the focus now shifts away from the track and toward regaining strength, mobility, and confidence after one of the toughest moments of his career.
