The sunlit courts of Ciutadella hosted a thrilling week of tennis at the ATP Challenger 100 Open Menorca, where Raul Brancaccio lifted the trophy and Spanish qualifier Alex Martinez became the tournament’s breakout story.
Brancaccio, the Italian veteran, delivered a commanding performance in the final, defeating Martinez 6-1, 6-4 in just 69 minutes. This victory adds Menorca to his previous Challenger titles in San Benedetto (2022) and Noumea (2023), marking his third career win at this level. His path to the championship, however, was far from straightforward. In the semifinals, he battled American qualifier Dali Blanch, winning the first set before suffering a surprising 0-6 second set. Brancaccio rallied to take the decider 7-6 (2), demonstrating both mental toughness and resilience.
While Brancaccio claimed the title, it was Martinez’s journey that captivated fans. The Spanish qualifier, ranked No. 405 in the world, overcame significant odds to reach his second Challenger final. Menorca’s challenging conditions, including strong winds and a condensed schedule that forced players to contest two matches in a single day, tested every competitor. Martinez thrived under these conditions, toppling top seed Valentin Royer and compatriot Pol Martin Tiffon before reaching the final.
Martinez credits his experience playing four years of college tennis at the University of Oklahoma for preparing him for tough, windy conditions. His participation in the ATP Next Gen Accelerator program and his recent rehabilitation from knee injuries have also contributed to his professional resurgence. A key moment came in the semifinals against Daniel Rincon, where Martinez’s perseverance and focus were on full display.
The 25-year-old maintained a disciplined routine throughout the tournament, keeping a steady mental approach with evening walks and time offline with his coach. Though he fell short in the final, Martinez emerged as one of Menorca’s standout players and a rising name to watch on the Challenger Tour.
Brancaccio’s victory and Martinez’s breakout performance highlight a week of competitive tennis that balanced seasoned skill with emerging talent, leaving a lasting impression on the Menorca courts.
