Fabio di Giannantonio’s strong start to the season has boosted his chances of securing a long-term place at VR46, while Franco Morbidelli’s struggles raise concerns over his MotoGP future.

The early phase of the MotoGP season has created a clear contrast within VR46 Racing Team, where Fabio Di Giannantonio is building momentum while Franco Morbidelli faces increasing pressure to secure his future.

Morbidelli’s performances in the opening rounds have raised doubts about his place in the team beyond 2026. Despite some external challenges, including tyre characteristics, his overall lack of pace has been difficult to ignore. At the race in Austin, he qualified down in 20th and finished outside the leading group in both races, a concerning result given the competitiveness of the Ducati machinery he is riding.

In contrast, di Giannantonio has taken a significant step forward this season. Riding the latest GP26, he has delivered some of the strongest performances of his MotoGP career, including consecutive pole positions and consistent front-running pace. His improvement has positioned him as one of the more competitive riders within Ducati’s line-up.

The gap between the two teammates has become increasingly evident. While Morbidelli has struggled to find grip and confidence, particularly in the early stages of races, di Giannantonio has shown both speed and composure. His ability to challenge leading riders and maximise race results has strengthened his case for a long-term role.

The situation is further complicated by VR46’s future plans. The team, led by Valentino Rossi, has already secured Fermin Aldeguer for one of its seats in the 2027 era. This leaves only one position available, turning the intra-team comparison into a direct battle for survival.

Morbidelli’s main challenge has been a persistent lack of grip, particularly with new tyres. This has affected his qualifying results and left him unable to compete effectively in the early laps. Although he has occasionally shown improved pace later in races, the deficit to his teammate remains significant, as seen by the large gap between them in Austin.

Despite the current struggles, Morbidelli’s past achievements show he has the ability to compete at a high level. However, with contract discussions approaching and limited seats available, time is becoming a critical factor.

The upcoming test at Jerez is likely to be an important moment in shaping VR46’s decision. For di Giannantonio, the objective is to maintain his current form and secure his place. For Morbidelli, it may represent one of the final opportunities to demonstrate he still belongs at the front of the grid.
