Safety concerns from MotoGP’s troubled return to Brazil have prompted immediate resurfacing works at the Ayrton Senna International Circuit, forcing schedule changes and raising questions ahead of upcoming races.

The Ayrton Senna International Circuit in Goiania is undergoing urgent resurfacing works following serious track issues that disrupted MotoGP’s long-awaited return to Brazil in March.

The event marked the championship’s first visit to the country in two decades, with Goiania hosting a premier class race for the first time in nearly 40 years. However, what began as a celebratory occasion quickly turned into a safety concern after heavy rain exposed weaknesses in the circuit’s asphalt.

Problems first appeared on Saturday when a hole formed on the main straight, forcing a delay before the sprint race could proceed. Conditions worsened on race day, as riders reported uneven surfaces at Turn 4 and deteriorating asphalt at Turns 10 and 11. Loose debris became a major hazard, with stones striking riders at high speed.

The incidents prompted immediate concern among competitors and officials, leading local authorities and the FIM to call for urgent corrective measures. The Government of Goias confirmed that a full resurfacing project was necessary to ensure rider safety and protect the circuit’s reputation.

Repair works began on April 6, with the initial phase expected to take several days. This will be followed by a 30-day curing period to allow the new asphalt to settle properly. As a result, the circuit is set to remain closed until around May 10.

The closure has already affected the racing calendar, with a Porsche Cup event scheduled for late April postponed. Organisers remain hopeful that upcoming series such as Stock Car and Moto1000GP, planned for mid to late May, will proceed without disruption. Moto1000GP officials have stated that they have not received any notice of delays at this stage.

The resurfacing effort now becomes critical in restoring confidence in the venue, as Brazil looks to secure its place once again on the MotoGP calendar.
