Honda Pushes Ahead with 850cc Future Bike Testing at Sepang

Honda has taken another step toward MotoGP’s 2027 era, returning its 850cc prototype to the track at Sepang as development gathers momentum.

Honda has continued development of its future MotoGP machine, with its 850cc prototype returning to the track at Sepang International Circuit as preparations intensify for the sport’s major 2027 rule changes.

The new bike, designed for the upcoming regulations, represents a significant shift from the current 1000cc machines. MotoGP will reduce engine capacity to 850cc from 2027, alongside wider technical changes that include reduced aerodynamics, the removal of ride-height devices, and a switch to a new tyre supplier.

Honda has already begun early on-track testing, with test rider Takaaki Nakagami leading development work. Initial runs at Sepang, including sessions affected by wet conditions, have provided valuable feedback as engineers refine the concept.

Early impressions of the prototype point to a noticeably lighter machine, a key objective under the new regulations. A reduction in weight is expected to improve handling and agility, helping offset the drop in engine capacity. Nakagami described the bike as surprisingly light and manageable even in difficult conditions.

The 850cc engine itself is not simply a scaled-down version of the current unit. Honda has reworked the overall design, including weight distribution and power delivery, in an effort to maintain performance while improving safety and rideability.

The development programme comes at a crucial time for Honda, which is aiming to rebuild its competitiveness after several challenging seasons in MotoGP. By starting work early on the 2027 machine, the manufacturer hopes to gain an advantage ahead of what is set to be one of the biggest technical resets in the championship’s history.

Although the project is still in its early stages, further testing is expected throughout the year as Honda continues to evolve the bike. With multiple manufacturers also working on their own 850cc concepts, development over the coming months is likely to shape the competitive landscape for MotoGP’s next era.
